Palma Half Marathon

Half Marathon Race Report: Palma Mallorca.

Set on the island of Mallorca and in the old city of Palma the TUI Marathon, Half Marathon 10k and nordic walk truly has something to offer everyone.

This mid October race offered one last opportunity for some fun in the sun before the winter arrives back home. Myself and Kirsty would be racing the half marathon distance (13 miles) while several friends would  be taking part in both the marathon and half marathon events.

The race itself takes in a beautiful out and back section along the coast weaving around the harbour and the giant cruise ships.Exposed to the sun it was already 25 degrees before lunch time.  once you have retraced your steps you are taken into the stunning old city of Palma. As the route snakes in and out of the main shopping areas and tiny back streets you are often left wondering where you will end up next. Before long you are running along side the ancient Palma cathedral which makes for one of the most memorable back drops to any race I have taken part in.

The relative shade of the city walls is quickly contrasted as you are led back onto the coast road for the last few miles. By now the sun is beating down and the humidity is up to 86%. The final turn around  point appears to be a roundabout only to somewhat cruelly lead you off left and back towards the harbour. This is made worse as you have just run past the finish.

After one last push back to the roundabout the finishing straight was beckoning. A fantastic race and a great atmosphere.  It was really nice to race with no pressure and soak up this fantastic setting.

Kirsty raced brilliantly in the heat as did the rest of our group. The marathon runners had a truly challenging day and all did remarkably well. All that was left to do was drink the free beer laid on by the event organiser (non-alcoholic of course) and enjoy some of the islands delicious little tapas bars.

A special congratulations to Claire B who completed her first marathon in Palma. Claire raced well and looked strong as she finished, she couldn’t stop smiling for the rest of the trip. Claire has since join us at the Fitness Fundamentals class as she looks to build on her success ahead of new challenges in 2015. Well done Claire.
